Here’s what I did! 👇🏼
I didn’t spray or use any sort of chemical. Just two simple things kept all of them away. Can you believe I didn’t see one? I can’t, because if you know squash bugs, they come out in droves.
First I trellised my pumpkins. I even trellised heavier pumpkins like jarrhadale and Cinderella pumpkins. My trellises are cattle panels supported by T posts.
Second and most importantly I waited to plant any squash or pumpkins (anything that squash bugs love) until June.
Since the soil is warmer in June your seeds will germinate quicker and will probably make up for the lost time too!
If you live somewhere with a really short growing season you could also start some indoors and transplant in June too.
I’m pretty sure the later planting is what really kept them away. If you can miss the first big window for when the overwintering adult squash bugs emerge and lay their eggs you might just miss them entirely like me. They will be in someone else’s garden instead of yours!

Now’s the time to plant, and it’s super easy. Just get your seeds and plant them directly into the soil. Keep the soil watered until they sprout.
